Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)

Intramuscular stimulation, or IMS, is a form of acupuncture rooted in anatomy and performed by highly trained physiotherapists and doctors. Based on traditional Chinese acupuncture, it incorporates an understanding of neurophysiology of pain from Western medicine, as well as Dr Chan Gunn’s assessment techniques in identifying underlying nerve irritations for the treatment of chronic pain.

During IMS, specially designed filament needles are used to stimulate neuromuscular tissues, with a focus on myofascial trigger points or “knots” in the muscles. These knots can be painful, and may also cause pain throughout other areas of the body. IMS aims to reduce this in order to promote specific and active strengthening of the muscle tissue. Common effects of IMS therapy include reduced inflammation, pain relief, reduction in headaches, and increased flexibility and range of motion.

Therapeutic effects include:

  • Reduced Inflammation
  • Pain relief
  • Reduction of Headaches
  • Increase range of motion
