Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)

Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)

IMS is a type of functional dry needling. It is used by our certified physiotherapists to treat chronic muscular and trigger-point related pain.

Much like acupuncture, IMS involves the skillful insertion of fine needles into the body. The main difference between the two approaches is that IMS is based on segmental myofascial (trigger point) theory while traditional acupuncture is rooted in meridian and chi theory.

After your initial assessment, we will be able to identify the underlying causes of your discomfort and map out your ‘hot spots’. Depending on your condition, our specialists may suggest a multi-treatment approach to offer holistic healing.

Should IMS be part of your treatment plan, here is what to expect:
During IMS, thin acupuncture needles will be used to stimulate your neuromuscular tissues and trigger points. These needles are solid but very fine, so you can rest assured that no fluid is injected or drawn through them, and the insertion offers minimal discomfort.

Since IMS can effectively target underlying nerve irritation, it is highly effective for relieving neuropathic pain and muscle hypersensitivity. Our patients also experience reduced inflammation, increased flexibility and a range of other benefits.
